Background of the study
Code‑mixing—the practice of blending two or more languages within a single conversation—is a prevalent feature of Nigerian social media communication. WhatsApp and Facebook, as two widely used platforms, provide distinct contexts for code‑mixing that reflect Nigeria’s rich linguistic diversity (Obi, 2023). In these digital spaces, users seamlessly integrate indigenous languages with global lingua francas, resulting in a unique communicative style that mirrors both cultural identity and modernity (Ibrahim, 2024). This study examines how code‑mixing operates within WhatsApp and Facebook posts, analyzing its role in conveying social nuances, humor, and cultural affiliations. The research focuses on the factors that drive code‑mixing, such as social context, audience, and conversational purpose, and explores how these factors influence language choices and stylistic variation (Okafor, 2023). By investigating the dynamics of code‑mixing in these platforms, the study aims to shed light on the adaptive nature of language in digital environments and contribute to a broader understanding of multilingual practices in Nigeria (Chukwu, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Despite widespread recognition of code‑mixing in Nigerian digital communication, there is insufficient research examining its specific manifestations on WhatsApp and Facebook. Existing literature tends to address code‑switching in spoken language without considering the unique dynamics of digital text, which includes the creative integration of multiple languages (Adebayo, 2023). This gap limits our understanding of how code‑mixing functions in online contexts and the extent to which it reflects and influences cultural identity and social interaction (Ibrahim, 2024). Addressing this issue is essential to comprehensively document digital multilingual practices in Nigeria.

Objectives of the study

  1. To analyze code‑mixing practices in WhatsApp and Facebook posts among Nigerian users.
  2. To identify the factors that promote and regulate code‑mixing in digital communication.
  3. To evaluate the impact of code‑mixing on cultural identity and social cohesion.

Research questions

  1. How is code‑mixing manifested in Nigerian WhatsApp and Facebook posts?
  2. What factors influence the use of code‑mixing in these digital contexts?
  3. What are the implications of code‑mixing for cultural identity in Nigeria?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides an in-depth appraisal of code‑mixing in Nigerian digital communication. Its findings will be valuable for linguists, educators, and digital communication specialists by clarifying how multilingual practices are negotiated in online spaces (Obi, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is confined to analyzing code‑mixing in WhatsApp and Facebook posts among Nigerian users. It does not extend to other social media platforms or offline linguistic practices, ensuring a focused examination of the specified phenomenon.

Definitions of terms

  • Code‑Mixing: The blending of two or more languages within a single discourse.
  • Digital Communication: The exchange of information via online platforms.
